AND JUST LIKE THAT, Myers Leonard is not with the Miami Heat anymore. Everyone that is a Heat fan and around the organization probably saw this coming after his recent comments that he made while playing a video game. Since the Heat traded for him a couple years back in the Hassan Whiteside trade, he has been a solid starter in his first year but this year has been riddled with injuries and was finally sidelined from a season ending shoulder surgery. He has not played much this year due to injuries and because of this the Heat were looking to trade him for a solid wing bench player who can help them on the defensive end. The comments made by the former Heat player just made it 100% that he was going to be traded before the deadline.
They traded for Trevor Ariza who is in his 17th season but has not played basketball in over a year since he chose not to play in the bubble last season with the Portland Trailblazers. Trevor is an NBA veteran who can guard multiple positions on the defensive end and can bring solid scoring on the offensive end for the Heat. Last season he shot 40% from 3 and scored about 11 points per game in 33 minutes.
Miami wanted Ariza a few years back but could not get him. This shows that just because Miami can't get a player one year doesn't mean they won't try and get him at a later date. Trevor is going to be a key piece in the Heat's playoff run this season with his defense skill set and his offense capability to score, pass and rebound. Another reason the Heat go after veteran players, just like Andre Iguodala, is because of the leadership and basketball IQ that they bring to the locker room and during the game with the young players. This is something that is hard to see while you watch the game but it has a very big impact on the young players when they can learn from players who have been around the game for a very long time and who have been able to play alongside SuperStar players.
I don't think this is going to be the last trade or signing that the Heat make before the trade deadline but it surely is a good start for what could come from the defending Eastern Conference Champions trying to get back to the Finals.
